Ben Mandelson

Record Producer, Musician, Founding Director WOMEX 

Born in Liverpool, UK, in 1953, and now living in London, Ben Mandelson is a leading freelance world music record producer, and was one of the group of UK music professionals who met above a London pub to create and launch the current ‘world music’ genre via a 3-month PR campaign in 1987. It lasted longer than 3 months. He was the co-founder and A&R manager / house producer for the influential GlobeStyle Records label in London, for whom he produced numerous artists in many parts of Europe and other continents;  and has many African, Balkan, Asian, Latin & Indian Ocean recordings ‘in the field’ and in the studio to his credit for GlobeStyle and for many many other record labels.

Next to his onsite recording and production experience worldwide, his lifelong multi-instrumental credentials have kept him active as a touring, performing and creative working musician.

Ben was Founding Director of the premier global music tradefair-conference-showcase event WOMEX (, and has been with the event one way or another since its starting year in 1994, including the Tampere edition in 2019. He is an active Supervisory Board member for the parent company Piranha Arts, which is based in Berlin, Germany.
